Garden furniture rarely spends the year in ideal conditions. Between strong sun, rain, pollen, dust, fallen leaves, and encroaching humidity, outdoor furniture ages quickly if left unprotected. The real question is not whether to cover your furniture, but rather to choose between a tarp or a cover for your garden furniture, depending on your usage, space, and the level of protection expected.

Tarp or garden furniture cover: the real difference

On paper, both serve to protect. In practice, there's a real difference in user comfort. A tarp is often more universal. It can cover various shapes, temporarily protect a large furniture set, and is suitable when looking for a simple solution. However, it sometimes fits less well, moves more in the wind, and more easily leaves exposed areas if the dimensions are not very precise.

A cover, on the other hand, is designed to fit a more specific type of furniture. It is often the best choice when you want regular, more stable, and visually cleaner protection. A well-fitted cover better protects armrests, a table top, the corners of an outdoor sofa, or cushions if they are occasionally left outside.

In other words, a tarp can be suitable for occasional or versatile needs. A cover is generally more appropriate for long-term use, especially if your garden furniture remains installed for several months on a terrace, patio, or near a pool.

When a tarp remains a good option

A tarp is not a bad choice. It even works very well in specific cases. If you need to quickly cover an entire set with a table and stacked chairs, or if you have unusually shaped furniture, a tarp can be simpler to use. It is also useful when you are looking for a temporary solution, for example, between seasons or during outdoor work.

Its other advantage is its flexibility. You can use it on different objects as needed. For some families, this versatile aspect matters a lot. The same protection can be used for a while for garden furniture, then for a barbecue or a set of chairs.

But you have to accept its limitations. An oversized tarp creates water pockets. A too-light tarp flaps in the wind. A poorly secured tarp lets dust in on the sides. And if it's placed directly on the furniture without a minimum of ventilation, moisture can get trapped underneath.
